Tim Whitmer, one of Kansas City's most recognizable pianists—and the emcee of Upcycle Happy Hour—brings his quartet to the April 1 party at the Piano Shop.
The Tim Whitmer GoodTime Quartet is a fixture at the Black Dolphin cocktail club, most often seen on Friday and Saturday evenings. Members include Ray DeMarchi on drums, Mike Herrera on saxophone, Chase McRoy on upright bass, plus Whitmer. Guests also join the group from time to time.
Whitmer’s most-recognized melody might be “Bookside Boogie,” a favorite for audience participation. His group also plays jazz standards, with Herrera taking turns on alto and tenor. Whitmer also plays regularly at Community Christian Church on the Plaza.
While serving as emcee at Upcycle’s monthly happy hour, he introduces the band and, during breaks, interviews the leader.
Classically trained, Whitmer followed the siren call of jazz after studying at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri-Kansas City with George Salisbury, a brilliant harmonically advanced pianist who studied with Mary Lou Williams. Since then, Whitmer has led a series of well-known bands. He has performed around the world.
